Responding to consultations is part of our behind-the-scenes advocacy work in the fight to end peat sales. By responding to public consultations we can make the case for peat legislation where it is relevant to other pieces of legislation. We reply to select consultations where we feel we can be impactful.
On this page several of our consultation responses from previous years are available to view for those interested in our stance on particular topics from across the UK.
Review of the Internal Markets Act 2020
Our March 2025 response to a consultation on the Internal Markets Act (IMA). The IMA presents a barrier to devolved UK nations acting independently to end the sale of peat. The Peat-free Partnership is exploring alternative routes and ways to overcome this barrier.
Scottish Biodiversity Strategy
Our December 2023 response to consultation on the Scottish Biodiversity Strategy. The strategy did not commit to legislation on peat sales, therefore failing to deliver on the “indirect drivers of biodiversity loss”. We re-emphasised that voluntary measures to reduce peat use have failed to eliminate the use of peat.
LEAF Marque Standard v17.0
Our May 2024 response to consultation on the LEAF Marque standard. The LEAF Marque recognises produce grown on farms employing particular sustainable farming techniques. We encouraged the use of peat-free growing media as a control point for the standard.
