Speak up for an end to peat sales

Your peatlands need you! Every day that passes without an end to peat sales means more precious habitats destroyed and more carbon released into our atmosphere.

Right now, the Horticultural Peat (Prohibition of Sale) Bill is making its way through Parliament, with a Second Reading on 4th July 2025. But it won’t make progress without the support of a wide range of MPs – and that’s where you come in.

PLEASE WRITE TO YOUR LOCAL POLITICIANS TODAY! Tell them that you want this legislation to end the sale of peat for horticulture.

Dear [Politician’s name],

RE: Legislation to end the sale of peat in horticulture

I am writing to ask for your support to end the sale of horticultural peat. I believe that this legislation is long overdue. While peat extraction for horticulture is allowed to continue, our ravaged peatlands keep on emitting greenhouse gases; extraction destroys the waterlogged conditions of peatlands which prevent plants decomposing, locking up carbon over thousands of years. They are also unable to fulfil their role as natural solutions to climate resilience and flooding, worsening the potential damage caused across the UK by extreme weather events that we continue to see. By ending the sale of horticultural peat and peat-containing products, we will be increasing the protection of biodiversity and carbon stores of peatland habitats.

The Horticultural Peat (Prohibition of Sale) Bill introduced by Sarah Dyke MP is scheduled for a Second Reading on the 4th July 2025. I urge you to give your full support to this bill in Westminster for its Second Reading and call on the UK Government to give the bill the parliamentary time that it deserves.

This is a significant opportunity to make a positive change to protect our environment and support a more sustainable, peat-free horticulture industry. I hope you will be there to support this Bill for its Second Reading.

Yours sincerely,
