Hello from the Peat-free Partnership Chair!

I am delighted to have been appointed as the new Chair of the Peat-free Partnership. As a passionate advocate for sustainability and the natural environment, I am excited to lead this partnership in our mission to establish peat-free legislation across the UK and Northern Ireland and protect our precious peatlands.

The Peat-free Partnership is a coalition of like-minded organisations dedicated to phasing out the use of peat in Horticulture. Peatlands are incredibly valuable ecosystems that play a crucial role in carbon sequestration, biodiversity, flood protection and water quality. However, they are being rapidly depleted due to the extraction of peat for use in horticultural products.

As Chair of the Peat-free Partnership, I am committed to raising awareness about the importance of peatlands and promoting sustainable alternatives to peat across the Horticultural sector. Together with our steering group and members, we will promote measures that will support a home-grown, British Horticulture industry that can be resilient, innovative, sustainable and support a circular economy.

One of my main goals as Chair is to collaborate with the Horticultural sector throughout the supply chain – with growing media producers, nurseries, garden centres and retailers – to encourage policymakers to bring in the widespread adoption of peat-free mandates. Only clear, legislative, time-bound targets for phase out of peat can provide the certainty and level playing field that producers need to enable a peat-free Horticulture sector to thrive.

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to lead the Peat-free Partnership and I am excited to work alongside our dedicated team and members to drive positive change. Together, we can make a difference and create a more sustainable, low carbon Horticulture sector.

If you are a growing media producer, nursery, garden centre or retailer committed to going peat-free throughout your supply chain, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We would love you to join us on our mission to support a sustainable peat-free horticultural sector.
